Ingredients of Concord Grape Pie

To make a Concord grape pie, you will need the following ingredients.

  • 1 (14.1 ounce) package double-crust pie pastry, thawed
  • 5 cups Concord grapes
  • 1 ¼ cups white sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ¾ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Wash and stem the grapes. Squeeze the pulp out of the skins into a large saucepan. Place the skins into a large bowl and set aside.
  3. Mash a few grapes in the saucepan to release their juices. Place over medium-low heat and bring to a full boil.
  4. Run the hot pulp mixture through a food mill to remove the seeds.
  5. Add the pulp to the skins in the large bowl and stir in the lemon juice.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, and salt. Stir into the grape mixture.
  7. Pour the grape filling into the bottom crust of the pie. Dot with butter and cover with the top crust.
  8. Crimp the edges of the crust and cut several slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  9. Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
  10. Reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  11. Let the pie cool completely before slicing and serving.

Tips

  • For a more flavorful pie, you can use homemade pie crust.
  • If you don’t have a food mill, you can remove the seeds from the grapes by pressing them through a fine mesh strainer.
  • To prevent the pie from overbrowning, cover the edges of the crust with foil for the first 15-20 minutes of baking.
  • Serve the pie warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Variations

  • For a lattice top pie, roll out the top crust and cut it into strips. Weave the strips together over the top of the pie filling.
  • For a crumb top pie, combine 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, and 1/4 cup butter. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the top of the pie filling before baking.
  • To add a little spice to your pie, you can stir in 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves to the filling.

Enjoy!
