Easy Grape Jelly Recipe

Grape jelly is a sweet, fruit-based spread typically made from grape juice, sugar, and pectin. It has a smooth, translucent texture and a deep, tangy flavor.

Grape jelly is a popular condiment in the United States, where it is often paired with peanut butter for a classic PB&J sandwich.

Grape jelly is made with a variety of different grape varieties, but Concord grapes are the most common type used.

Concord grapes have a deep purple color and a tart flavor that makes them ideal for making jelly.

Ingredients of Grape Jelly

  • 3 1/2 pounds Concord grapes, washed and stemmed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 7 cups sugar
  • 1 (3-ounce) package powdered pectin

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the grapes and water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the grapes are soft.
  2. Pour the grape mixture through a jelly bag or cheesecloth-lined colander set over a large bowl. Let the juice drip through for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  3. Measure out 4 cups of grape juice and pour it into a large saucepan. Add the sugar and pectin and stir to combine.
  4. Bring the mixture to a full rolling boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Boil for exactly 1 minute, then remove from the heat.
  5. Skim off any foam from the surface of the jelly.
  6. Pour the hot jelly into hot, sterilized jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean damp cloth and seal with lids.
  7. Process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes, adjusting for altitude.
  8. Remove the jars from the water bath and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Tips

  • For a smoother jelly, strain the grape juice through a fine-mesh sieve before adding the sugar and pectin.
  • To test if the jelly is done, place a small plate in the freezer for 5 minutes. Then, spoon a little bit of the jelly onto the cold plate. If the jelly wrinkles when you push it with your finger, it is ready.
  • If you don’t have a jelly bag or cheesecloth, you can strain the grape juice through a colander lined with several layers of paper towels.
  • To make sure your jelly seals properly, be sure to use hot, sterilized jars and lids.
